Niagara Falls is a city located in Ontario at the Canada U.S. border. Approximately 12 million tourists per year visit the“honeymoon capital of the world”, where the Horseshoe Falls are located. However, Niagara Falls was not always a tourist destination. Many of the battles in the 1812 war were fought in Niagara. Several attractions and street names received their name due to events in the war. Laura Secord Chocolates is named after a heroine who warned the British troops about an attack. Niagara Falls became a tourist attraction in the 1820s.
Niagara Falls was called Elgin until 1856, and then Clifton once joining the community of Clifton. In 1881, it was named Niagara Falls, which comes from the word “onguiaahra” meaning “thundering noise".
Niagara Falls includes three, 12,000 year old waterfalls that were created during the last ice age when melting glaciers formed the Great Lakes. The American and Bridal Veil Falls are 176 ft in height and 150,000 U.S. gallons of water fall over per second. The Canadian/Horseshoe Falls is 167 ft in height and 600,000 U.S. gallons of water fall over per second.
Niagara Falls also offers various man made attractions including the Maid of the Mist, Skylon Tower, Table Rock Scenic Tunnels, Spanish Aero Car, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, Marineland, Casino Niagara, IMAX Theatre and Butterfly Conservatory. Niagara Falls is one of Canada’s busiest and most popular tourist locations which causes growth commercially and culturally. Besides being an astounding tourist destination, Niagara Falls is also a major electricity source for Ontario.
